Miami, Ohio unveils craziest new football helmet of 2013

Miami (Ohio) is hoping to turn things around after 4-8 straight seasons under Don Treadwell, and that starts with the uniforms. Wednesday saw the revelation of a new set of adidas duds that don’t look exactly like everything college football wears. We let you decide if this is a good thing or a bad thing.

Yes, as you can see it says “MIAMI” right on the back of the helmet. Most teams go for logos on the side of the helmet, as Miami typically did, but they got rid of the Block M on the sides, added the BIG TEAM NAME to the back, and covered the helmet with random scribbles and moved the M to the front:

Yeah, it’s also good on the shoulders. The school’s press release states that it is the only college football school with this feature. I’m not a big fan, as the “A” is kind of replaced by the player’s head. And the player’s head has a big “M” on it. Which makes it an advertisement for the Chasing Mimi podcast.

As for the uniform itself:

Frankly, there is nothing wrong with that. It’s bold and it’s crisp. Exactly the opposite of what the Ohio-based school wants to hear, but it sounds a bit like alternative Ohio State uniforms, provided you flip the color scheme. I like this. The chrome Block M on the pants is nice, and the uniform numbers have a nice texture: Zxyyzkpyyzrcjit

They are a bit visually striking at first because of some concepts that you don’t see on a lot of jerseys. A major overhaul isn’t the worst thing for a team looking to shake things up, especially after wearing relatively traditional and generic jerseys in the past. We think it’s sharp, but we can see where you’re coming from if you think it’s too garish and bonkers.
