DALLAS, Texas (KTVT) — Practice has only just begun, but football season is already causing headaches for parents like Rachel Goldberger.

“I spent the last few days trying to find a helmet. I went from store to store. I called tons of stores. I just can’t get a helmet,” she said.

That’s because football helmets for kids before high school are nearly impossible to find at DFW.

The few that remain at Team Sports in North Dallas are all small.

“It’s a frustrating time for us as a company trying to sell things, and customers are desperately trying to get a helmet, and no one has inventory,” said Team Sports director Chad Vickers. .

The problem is a shortage of resin and other parts that make up a football helmet and this is affecting all brands nationwide.

Other gear – including shoulder pads and soccer cleats – are also rare, but helmets might not appear until September or October.

“Our order that we placed a year ago, we are still waiting from the manufacturer. They keep pushing it back and pushing it back and pushing it back,” Vickers said.

Coach Charles Haley Jr. said the shortage is forcing him to make adjustments to practices, focusing on fundamentals and non-tackle drills. But, he said, it also robs players of valuable time to acclimate.

“They have to actually do it physically,” he said. “You have to be comfortable with a helmet. Just wearing a helmet isn’t really an answer.

And Goldberger said, on game day, no helmet would mean no game for his 7th grader.

“I want him to be completely safe. You need a helmet in football to be safe.
