Whitehall to retire Saquon Barkley’s football shirt

Saquon Barkley will take his permanent place among the Whitehall High School football greats who rose through the ranks of the NFL.

Barkley will have his number 21 retired at halftime of the Zephyrs’ Sept. 10 home game against Liberty.

He is the third former Whitehall standout to receive the honour, joining Matt Millen and Dan Koppen, who both had long professional careers.

“The opportunity to honor Saquon for his outstanding achievements throughout his Zephyr football career is something we have been looking forward to,” Whitehall sporting director Bob Hartman wrote in a press release. “Saquon’s high school, college and NFL career has followed the same path as Matt and Danny. We look forward to an amazing night hosting Saquon, his family, friends and coaches.

Tickets for the contest will be available online and go on sale at 7 p.m. on September 3.

Barkley returns to the New York Giants this fall after suffering a torn ACL in 2020. The running back was NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2018.

The Giants are at home against the Broncos on September 12.

Barkley rushed for a school-record 3,642 yards and scored 61 total touchdowns during his time with the Zephyrs. He became an All-American at Penn State before being selected second overall in the 2018 NFL Draft.
